A settlement assessment has its own requirements

An offer in compromise is a process that may allow an eligible taxpayer to resolve a tax liability for less than the full amount. It is not available simply because a balance feels large or a reduction would be helpful. The IRS considers eligibility and the circumstances required by its current procedures.

Ask whether an assessment is appropriate before assuming an offer is the right route. Payment arrangements and account corrections address different issues and should not be confused with settlement review.

Understand the financial review

Income, expenses, assets and ability to pay can matter to an offer assessment. Information should accurately describe your circumstances and be supported where required. Mention changes, unusual transactions and anything you do not understand so the review can address them openly.

We help you discuss what information is needed and what assistance would include. Ask about the work, fees and applicable requirements before proceeding. The official IRS offer information explains current forms, procedures and considerations.

Keep preparation separate from approval

A completed worksheet, an introductory conversation or a proposed offer amount does not guarantee acceptance. Any IRS decision follows the applicable review. Understand who prepares and submits material, what follow-up may be needed and which obligations continue while the matter is considered.
