Help understanding an IRS notice

Understand what your IRS notice requests, which tax year it concerns and what response or deadline needs attention.

Identify what the IRS is asking you to do

Keep every page of the notice, including the response instructions. Look for the notice number, tax year, stated issue and any date for action. A letter may request information, propose a change or explain an account balance. Read the specific request before deciding what response is appropriate.

We help you discuss the notice and the work that may be needed. Say what you understand, what seems incorrect and whether the balance is also difficult to pay. Those questions can require different information.

Prepare a response that addresses the issue

Useful material may include the relevant return, a payment confirmation or a document connected to the item in question. Ask which records are needed rather than sending unrelated information. Explain any missing document or uncertainty honestly.

Compare the proposed response with the actual instructions in your letter. General website information does not replace a notice-specific deadline or direction. Keep a copy of what is submitted and any confirmation received.

Understand the assistance and timing

Ask who would review the notice, prepare information and handle follow-up, and how fees and authorization work. Calling for advice does not itself submit a response, extend a deadline or establish an IRS decision. If a date is approaching, make that clear at the beginning of the conversation.
